The year 2011 was particularly fertile in the smartphones segment. Dual-core processors were introduced, giant displays, new platforms and performance. At the end of the year, we present a top with some of the most important smartphones on the market released in 2011, and, which certainly will continue to rule a big part of 2012.

iPhone 4S

The latest version of the smartphone offered by Apple was launched in early October, is undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited smartphone of the year. Although most fans were expecting the iPhone with a different design and more than 4-inch screen, the update occurred more on the hardware. Thus, iPhone 4S had significant improvements and a faster processor, a 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording function.

Apple iPhone 4S debuted with Siri personal assistant, a feature quite well received by the public. In the future, the Cupertino Company will be launching a special iPhone next year, given the unexpected expansion of the Android platform.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

A smartphone manufactured by Samsung in collaboration with Google. Google has launched the latest version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. From this point of view, the smartphone is undoubtedly a preview of the future platform developed by Google.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus combines advanced technology developed by Google and Samsung, including latest hardware technology. The display is of 4.65″ using HD Super AMOLED technology with a resolution of 720p (1280×720 pixels), supported by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor.

Because Ice Cream Sandwich will be the standard for Android devices next year, Galaxy Nexus is certainly a strong presence in this market segment at the end of the year.

Motorola Razr

Motorola RAZR is the newest high-end smartphone launched by the American company. Built from Kevlar fiber and protected with Gorilla Glass screen, the terminal provides durability against various accidents. The smartphone also features a 4.3″ Super AMOLED screen, 1.2 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera capable of recording Full HD 1080p videos, internal storage capacity of 16 GB and 1780 mAh battery. Motorola RAZR came at the end the year with the distinction of “the slimmest smartphone on the market.”

Samsung Galaxy S II

The top-level device manufactured by Samsung: Galaxy S II. Samsung Galaxy S II was launched in April and automatically became a serious candidate for the title of the smartphone of the year.

The Korean company equipped this smartphone with a 4.3″ AMOLED display with Super Plus technology, resulting in an error-free playback of the spectrum of colors. Galaxy S II also offers a number of top features such as dual-core processor at 1.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, 8-megapixel camera and 1080p HD video recording.

BlackBerry 9900

The new BlackBerry is a significant improvement over its predecessor model. Is the slimmest phone produced by the Canadian company – only 10.5 mm – and offers, in addition to the well-known QWERTY keyboard, a touch screen, the first BlackBerry with this configuration. BlackBerry 9900 Bold has a 1.2 GHz processor, 768MB of RAM and support for NFC (Near Field Communications).

HTC Sensation

HTC believes in the word “much better” and gives to Sensation the best facilities: a large screen, which offers more space and a good overview, a dual-core processor, which offers high performance, Android OS with the new Sense interface, which offers many possibilities for customization – and of course, access to Android Market, which offers many applications.

Sensation is one of the best smartphones running Android OS and represents a real alternative for those who do not want to take part in the iPhone hysteria. In the second half of the year, the Taiwanese company has launched two new models of Sensation receiving Beats Audio technology and a dedicated pair of headphones.

Nokia N9

The first and last Nokia equipped with the operating system MeeGo made waves among the specialized press. Unfortunately, with the launch of Nokia Lumia 800, born of the Nokia-Microsoft partnership, N9 was pushed aside. Nokia N9 has a minimalist unibody housing, with a thickness of 12 mm and a curved screen of 3.9-inch, AMOLED ClearBlack, with a resolution of 854×480 pixels.

Colorful menu icons and the splendid contrasts blends perfectly with the matte black case. Outside the Power button and two-volume keys located on the right side, N9 has no navigational keys. Nokia N9 use MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan OS, more refined version of the operating system developed by Nokia in collaboration with Intel. For those familiar with the key layout of the Android or the iPhone Home button, N9 does nut use this interaction button, and this will be an interesting experience.

The phone has a Cortex A8 processor rated at 1GHz, but helped by the 1GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX530 GPU. The internal memory is 16 or 64GB. The 8 megapixel camera can record videos at 720p.

LG Optimus 2X

Appeared early in 2011, LG Optimus 2X was the first phone with dual-core processor on the market. This has provided, among other things, a place in Guinness World Records. Due to the dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor running at 1GHz, the phone is extremely fast, and can perform any task in record time, including Full HD 1080p payback and recording.

HTC Titan

Equipped with a huge display of 4.7-inches, a resolution of 480×800 pixels and a gorgeous aluminum housing of just 9.9 mm thick, HTC Titan is a model that immediately draws your attention. The front 8 megapixel camera is complemented by a secondary camera of 1.3 megapixel. The 1.5 GHz Scorpion processor is complemented by an Adreno 205 GPU.

The phone lets you quickly create and edit documents with Microsoft Office Mobile. Expect an explosion of smartphones equipped with Windows Phone in 2012. Until then, the HTC Titan is a perfect choice for fans of the OS platform developed by Microsoft.

Nokia E6

The E6 is the next evolutionary step in Nokia’s business line, following the successful models such as Nokia E71 or Nokia E72. E6 is also a sleek, with steel and glass elements, and a QWERTY keyboard under a 2.4-inch TFT LCD display. Business functions are solid and we can mention the access to Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Communicator Mobile and Microsoft SharePoint applications such as QuickOffice or World Traveler and business applications on the Ovi Store, such as Sale Force.

Connectivity is also excellent, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and HSDPA cat 9. Nokia E6 is one of the best terminals launched with Symbian Anna this year.

It was a hot topic last week: Heavy match about app download number. And congratulations to all, they can be proud about it.

Those from Google (Android Market) came out with a more detailed infographic which provides all kinds of relevant details about the billion downloads that are proud of, among which what is the most downloaded application, in which country most applications are downloaded, and some other interesting information about downloaded applications.

Just take a look at the graph below:

Quite interesting job. Again, great job for AppStore and Android Market.

Rockstar Games announced with the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Grand Theft Auto 3, a game version for Android and iOS mobile platforms. This mobile version of GTA 3 will be launched on 15 December, and will cost only $5. Unfortunately, the game will not run on many obsolete or modest devices, but there are no problems for the new ones.

List of mobile devices compatible with GTA 3:

- Apple iOS Devices: iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 & 4S, iPod touch 4th Generation

- Android Phones: HTC Rezound, LG Optimus 2x, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid X2, Motorola Photon 4G, Samsung Galaxy R, T-Mobile G2x

- Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Dell Streak 7, LG Optimus Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, Sony Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive

Excluding Apple’s and HTC Rezound, all compatible devices are based on NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processors. The game will look and feel almost the same as in the game on PC.

Personally, I have tried just about every HD game in the Android market. Of course, some I could not install due to issues with my CPU or graphic chip. (I have a Galaxy S Plus single core). The idea was that for a console with a processor of only 330MHz, developers were capable of creating games with good graphics, but for phones with 1GHz dual-core CPU’s are still struggling.

In this article we will present a phone that was long expected in 2011, namely the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Technical specifications of Samsung Galaxy Nexus:

- SuperAMOLED display of 4.65″, 1280 x 720 pixels and 16 million colors;
- Dual-core 1.2 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, 16/32 GB storage, GPU PowerVR SGX540;
- Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS;
- 21 Mbps 3G, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, DLNA, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi hotspot, microUSB
- 5 MP autofocus camera, LED flash, 1080p 30 fps, 1.3 MP front camera;
- 1750 mAh battery, 135 gr., 8.9 mm thick.

Design:

It is thinner than the said value of 8.9 mm. Only at the base is 8.9 mm thick, at the top is much thinner. Feels good in hand when talking about a phone with a display of 4.65-inch and 135.5 x 67.9 x 8.9 mm. It weighs 135 grams. It’s easier than iPhone 4S, which, with only 3.5-inch display has over 140 gr. of weight.

Weight is an issue that does not matter so much, especially for buyer decision. Frame surrounding the phone is made of metal and plastic, and battery case of a flexible rubber. It is better styled than the Galaxy S II, but I’m amazed at how fragile this phone seems.

Screen and sound:

Display size is 4.65-inch capable of 1280 x 720 resolution and 16 million colors. Big displays are very useful for browsing the Internet, especially where more content is available on a site. The technology behind the display is SuperAMOLED – SGS II Plus.

Sound comes from a small speaker located on the back of the phone. The sound is strong and clear enough, and I would say that they added a little bass. It sounds great. I noticed that no matter how you hold your phone, landscape or portrait, the sound will not be obscured. That’s very good, especially when you play your favorite games, or you have sound in the background. The 3.5 mm jack is positioned at the bottom, it provides a powerful and clear sound that will please many music lovers.

Operating system and applications:

Here is another positive point for the Galaxy Nexus. Besides being one of the phones offering HD resolution, Android is coming in version 4.0 – code named Ice Cream Sandwich. This version is a completely new OS and you will discover new features or options every time you use it longer. I think Google has done an excellent job in providing a superior experience on any mobile, with Android operating systems. However, this opinion may be subjective and ultimately, every person will appreciate an OS according to his needs, and you may better like iOS or Windows Phone 7 OS.

There are no problems of incompatibility between applications. In a few days, I managed to install many applications from Android Market. I was pleased with applications for benchmark tests, those for Facebook, Twitter, Asphalt 6 HD, Captain America, Thunder Racing. More important are the pre-installed applications such as:

Google Plus, Maps, Latitude, Locations, Market, Google Messenger Plus, navigation, news and weather, movie studio, Music, YouTube, Google Talk, Earth. Not much point to say that synchronization and related services, which include Google Reader, Docs, Calendar goes without any problem and in perfect harmony.

Browsing is a pleasure on this device. The overall speed impressed me a lot. It is more fluent than the Samsung Galaxy. Qwerty touch keyboard seems to work very well, there is enough space between keys to properly use the keyboard.

Connectivity:

Samsung went on minimalism. There is no dedicated camera button as in Windows Phone 7.5 Mango phones, but the right side gives the power button, NFC area that stands out with three points on the right, the connectivity for a dock and installation in a car, and the MicroUSB for charging and PC connection. The left side is dedicated volume control keys. The battery cover opens easily and is easily put in place, and provides access to the SIM card slot without having to remove the battery.

Connecting via wi-fi worked without problems. Sound calls via 2G or 3G are available, and clear. What I like about Android phones is that they very easily connect to a PC, without having to install a software like Microsoft’s Zune, for example.

Camera and video:

Camera is of 5 megapixels. It has autofocus and LED flash, but the camera works very well indoor, even without using the led flash. It can record 1080p videos at 30 fps. Resulting images do not present chromatic aberrations. Video recording options are 480p, 720p and 1080p.

Autonomy:

The 1750 mAh battery must resist the energy consumption of a dual-core processor at 1.2 GHz, with 1 GB of RAM. The big generous display will also take a portion of the battery. I set the phone to full brightness, I installed lots of Android Market applications used wi-fi and, in less than a day, the battery life ended. Luckily, that does not take long to recharge. Naturally, if you leave brightness to automatically adjust and you don’t use intensive browsing via Wi-Fi or 3G, the phone should go on smoothly, even for 2-3 days.

Conclusions:

Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a smartphone that can be considered able to satisfy many users, and if their demands are met, I would say that anyone who wants maximum performance from his smartphone should go with the Galaxy Nexus to fulfill their needs. The biggest strengths of this phone are HD screen, powerful processor, Android 4.0, and support from Google. Some negative points could be mentioned: only 5 megapixel camera which leaves room for discussion and battery consumption of this dual-core smartphone. However, high performance and autonomy do not blend very well.

It rarely happens that a company to make a prototype and not directly release a model with which to compete in the market. Panasonic has big plans in regard to Europe and is preparing a phone to accommodate the needs of Europeans. Panasonic introduced a number of prototype images. It seems that the design is not 100% developed 100% and at the first glance, it looks similar to the Nokia N9 or Lumia 800.

It was mentioned that the phone reaches a thickness of 7.8 mm and would be competing with Motorola RAZR Droid. On the back, the Panasonic smartphone seems to be gently curved. The display is based on AMOLED technology of 4.3-inch with qHD 540×960 pixels resolution, and 16 million colors. I suspect that the operating system will be Android.

It seems that the best smartphone sales were related to Android-based phones, and this is because Android is considered an open OS. I personally don’t believe that Panasonic will launch this phone with Windows OS, and other mobile operating systems are not taken into account, because their reduced popularity.

The camera seems to be a part of technology patented with Panasonic Lumix. The phone will be brought to market in 2012, and it will be accompanied by a whole smartphone range from Panasonic. Panasonic plans are to sell 1.5 million smartphones worldwide.

Currently, Symbian Belle can be found only on the Nokia 701 smartphone. In a semi-official statement, in the first half of 2012, Symbian Belle will be ported to Symbian phones that have been announced along with Symbian S3, and here we refer to the Nokia N8, E7, C7 and C6-01.

There is a big difference in terms of hardware between Nokia 701 and the phones above. RAM memory of Nokia 710 is double, and the CPU is running at 1 GHz, while CPU on the N8, E7, C7 and C6-01 is of only 680 MHz. Symbian Belle comes with a different notification bar and a series of interesting changes to the interface. The browser moves better, and the overall experience is improved.

This is good news for those who possess, in particular, the Nokia N8 – a 12 Megapixel camera phone which made big news at the time. It is discussed by two other updates for the Symbian platform named Donna and Carla. The Nokia Symbian team is working hard, but note that no new launched Nokia smartphone is intended to fight in the high-end smartphone category, but at best on the middle level.

Samsung has recently launched a new smartphone model – Wave 3 S8600. The device comes with some specific technical features that will surely attract attention of technology fans. The latest smartphone from Samsung comes with an Super AMOLED 4-inch touchscreen and a generous resolution of 480×800 pixels. Furthermore, something that will be highly appreciated by many users: the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass technology.

Samsung Wave 3 S8600 is equipped with aluminum housing with the following dimensions: 125.9 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm, and a weight of only 122 grams.

One of the features that attracts attention to this new model is the operating system. Wave 3 S8600 runs on Bada OS platform, despite the fact that other operating systems have gained ground on the market lately.

The new Samsung Wave 3 S8600 is equipped with a Qualcomm Scorpion processor running at a frequency of 1.4 GHz. The internal memory of the smartphone is 4GB, being fitted a card slot for upgrading the memory to 32 GB.

The new model will be equipped with a five megapixel camera that allows video recording at 720p resolution with 30 fps. The phone has a pretty good autonomy, the model is equipped with a 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery. So the phone is capable of up to 535 hours in standby mode, and up to 14 hours of talk time.

The model is already available on the market for a price of “only” $1900

Nokia has launched in the first day of December a new model in the “feature” phones series – dedicated to mobile phones without special functions. Nokia X2-02 is a combination between a dual SIM phone and an MP3 player, but also a companion who can access the Internet when needed.

Even if the technical facilities are far from impressive in an era of smartphones, X2-02 is likely to become a hit with music lovers, both because of the dual SIM capability, as well as for its good price.

Technical specifications:

TFT display, 2.2-inch diagonal with 240×320 pixels
GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, microUSB 2.0
32GB microSD memory slot (maximum memory)
2 MP camera with video recording
Dual SIM with EasySwap
Dimensions: 113 x 50 x 15 mm
Weight: 93 grams

Design and construction:

Nokia X2-02 design retains the same style of Nokia X2, but has also many other elements specific of the classic Finnish manufacturer. This is particularly evident in keypad, accompanied by a central joystick and four adjacent keys.

On the right side, we find two keys for simplified access to the audi player, the main function is for quickly passing through songs found in the playlist. Another advantage is the phone weight – weighing only 93 grams, while having relatively common dimensions: 113x50x15 mm.

Technical features:

Nokia X2-02 is equipped with a TFT display of 2.2″ diagonal capable of 240×320 pixels resolution, a 2 MP camera able to record video clips (of modest quality)). The internal memory is not specified, but may be extended by microSD cards up to 32GB, which is essential for a phone dedicated to music enthusiasts.

Moreover, in addition to the MP3 player, the X2-02 is equipped with FM radio and is having “Play via Radio” function to record songs from radio stations. In addition, Nokia says the X2-02 has the most quality sound in its range.

In the absence of 3G and Wi-Fi, Internet connection is made through GPRS and EDGE, browsing is provided by Nokia Browser and dedicated pre-installed applications allow quick connection to social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

The phone uses the Series 40 software platform specially developed by Nokia for this kind of mobile phone and relies on a 1020 mAh battery which offers a range of up to 18 days of standby and up to 10 hours of talk time.

Dual SIM, EasySwap:

X2-02 can be used with two SIM cards simultaneously and switching from one operator to another is done immediately, without the need to close and restart the phone. In addition, the phone has a so-called SIM Manager that can manage separate settings for five different SIM cards.

Pricing and availability:

Nokia X2-02 did not receive a specific date for its release, but the price is estimated at around 60 EUR.

Flexible screen gadgets are real and will soon become as common as the classic gadgets, at least in the Samsung offers, a company that plans to integrate this technology into as many of its future products.

Samsung smartphone range is the main candidate and could receive the first models equipped with flexible screens from the first half of 2012.

Although, not the first company to promise flexible screen gadgets, Samsung could be the first manufacturer to adapt the technology for mass production and inclusion in devices accessible for the general public.

Samsung’s ambitions to create flexible display products were born after Liquivista acquisition, the company that developed the technology behind the current generation of flexible displays, featuring low energy consumption and high brightness in image rendering.

The first series of flexible screens that will debut during next year, is reserved primarily for mobile phones. Tablets and other devices equipped with large screens will get flexible screens later, after the technology reaches full maturity.

It remains to be seen the actual quality of images displayed on flexible screens and how well it is set when compared with today’s conventional AMOLED screens. For now, Samsung did not give too many details about the performance of new screens and did not say if they will come to be used for all the company’s products, or just for a separate category of products.
